The rapidly expanding world for sports betting-related programming on regional and national sports networks grew again on Sunday when DraftKings and SNY launched a new one-hour programming block of sports betting shows during the first Sunday of the 2019 NFL football season.
The Sweat, produced by DraftKings, was followed by SNY’s original program, Place Your Bets Presented by DraftKings Sportsbook. The two shows will air back-to-back every Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. ET throughout the regular season and playoffs.
According to a press release, The Sweat will feature news and analysis from DraftKings experts designed to help bring fans inside the game, while Place Your Bets Presented by DraftKings Sportsbook, will cover local New York sports teams and beyond by highlighting key matchups from around the league.
In June, New York joined the growing list of states that have legalized sports betting, though it is currently limited to in-person bets made at upstate casinos.
Still, it was only a matter of time before area television networks began creating related content, so the move by SNY makes sense because it’s a leader in New York sports coverage.
“With the legalization of sports betting increasing in states across the country, the compelling integration opportunities have become more prevalent and visible throughout the sports industry,” SNY president Steve Raab said via press release.
“Sports news impacts sports betting and this partnership with DraftKings marries the two – giving us an opportunity to deliver insightful new programs not just for sports bettors but for casual sports fans, avid sports fans and fantasy players.”
SNY covers a variety of New York area sports but is heavily focused on programming related to the MLB’s Mets and NFL’s Jets. The regional sports network is currently available to viewers throughout New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and northeastern Pennsylvania, as well as nationally via DIRECTV, Verizon FiOS, Comcast Cable, and AT&T U-Verse.
Major U.S. media companies have been quick to embrace opportunities in the new sports betting space that was created after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the federal ban on sports betting in May 2018.
Since then, sports media giants such as Bleacher Report, ESPN, Fox Sports and NBC Sports have all ramped up related content in a sustained effort to carve out their places in the growing field.
Recently, ESPN announced that one of its popular shows solely dedicated to sports betting, The Daily Wager, was moving to ESPN2 and that ESPNEWS would also be adding sports betting content. Meanwhile, NBC Sports began simulcasting its hit sports betting radio show, The Daily Dime, to several regional television affiliates across the country.
SNY has now joined the fray through its strategic partnership with DraftKings, an industry-leading sports technology and entertainment company.
“The legalization of sports betting transformed our business model not only as a sportsbook operator but also as a digital media hub,” DraftKings chief business officer Ezra Kucharz said via press release.
“We are entering the most prime period of the sports calendar for our company, and the move to syndicate our original programming via a widely-viewed and premier partner in SNY was a clear strategic decision.”
