Another sportsbook began taking bets in Pennsylvania on Tuesday as the Mohegan Sun Pocono in Plains Township initiated a soft launch campaign for their new sports betting lounge operated through a partnership with Unibet.
The casino, which is located just on the outskirts of Wilkes-Barre, will offer betting options for a myriad of popular sports once fully operational, including NFL football, MLB baseball, NHL hockey and NBA basketball, college football, golf, tennis, boxing, mixed martial arts, and soccer.
Types of bets offered will include straight bets, parlays and round robins with action to be had via both fixed odds and money lines. Prop bets and in-play bets will also be offered according to the casino’s website.
The soft launch is a two-day testing process with limited bets.
The first two days of betting were designed to be supervised under the guidance of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in order to ensure the sportsbook is both fully operational and working correctly under the necessary state-mandated regulations.
“These test nights under Gaming Control Board supervision will allow us to test the software, employee training, our procedures,” David Parfrey, the casino’s VP of marketing, according to Times Leader of Wilkes-Barre.
The soft launch began at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday and ran until midnight, and then again on Wednesday from 2 p.m. ET until midnight. While full-scale betting will be offered after the sportsbook opens in earnest, bets during the soft launch phase were restricted to just a few sports, including baseball, tennis and soccer.
Assuming all went as planned during the two days of testing procedures, the sportsbook will be fully operational for daily use by betting patrons beginning Thursday at 11 a.m. ET.
Unibet is the iconic flagship sportsbook brand of the Kindred Group, a Malta-based gambling operator with sportsbooks spread across multiple countries including the United States, UK and Australia. The partnership between the Mohegan Sun Pocono and Unibet officially brought the second Unibet-operated sportsbook into the U.S. market.
Earlier this month, Unibet partnered with Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City to launch a mobile sportsbook in New Jersey. While it's probable that an online version of the sportsbook will also be offered at some point in Pennsylvania, there is currently no timetable for the Mohegan Sun Pocono and Unibet to roll it out beyond the “near future” according to a report in The Citizen’s Voice of Wilkes Barre.
Until then, bettors will need to travel to the casino to place bets, where reports indicate a host of amenity awaits local bettors, including a 28-foot wide video wall, an ever-running sports ticker above the display featuring news and scores, two rows of lounge recliners and onsite access to a popular local eatery.
