The Washington Redskins and NBC Sports Washington have partnered on the NFL’s first predictive gaming live television presentation, according to the team’s official website. This innovation will be available to players throughout the NFL team’s four preseason games.
NBC Sports is set to take Redskins’ games to new heights in the coming days as they’re going to use the team’s four preseason games as pilot telecasts for a new interactive experience.
During the team’s four NFL exhibition contests, starting with Thursday’s game at Cleveland, fans can win $1000 cash each quarter – along with other exciting prizes – while playing for free. Fans will get the opportunity to predict the next play, scores and other aspects of the game. The ones who finish with the most points will be eligible for prizes.
NBC Sports will air an alternate telecast with an enhanced game experience. They’ll have graphics that overlay the gameplay on the broadcast, which will show things like real-time statistics, in-game data and interactive features. Fans can connect and play along by logging in at www.nbcsportswashington.com/predict via a mobile device or a desktop browser.
Fans, while they await legal sports betting in the nation’s capital, have nothing to lose by participating because it’s free to enter. And the prizes are quite generous with a grand being given away every quarter.
How the game will work is each quarter, points will be award for fans who make the right selections. As the game is taking place, fans be notified with a chime alert and will then be prompted with certain questions. They can make a selection on things like “Will Dwayne Haskins throw for a touchdown in the third quarter”? and if their predictions are accurate, they’ll collect points.
Each quarter, the top eligible scorer will collect the $1,000 prize, according to the Sports Business Daily website. However, if there are multiple winners, they’ll all split the prize. Other participants will be selected at random for other prizes simply for playing. Some of the other rewards includes game tickets, VIP experiences and Redskins memorabilia.
Of course, many wonder whether this is merely a step toward gambling as what players are essentially doing is live betting. It’s not an unreasonable question to ask because the Redskins are quite welcoming to gambling. Not only will they be the first team to launch this type of prediction contest, they were also the first franchise to partner with a daily fantasy sports operator.
They were also the first club to post their team marks on a scratch-off lottery ticket, so it’s quite clear they don’t frown upon any forms of gaming.
This won’t be NBC Sports first foray into this type of thing as NBC Sports Washington Plus offered a similar prediction contest during Washington Wizards games this past season. However, those featured point spreads, moneylines and totals. Redskins games will stick to props but won’t incorporate those traditional betting lines.
