There are several critical matchups in Week 9 that have playoff implications, but none may be more significant than the (3-4) Chicago Bears facing the (4-4) Philadelphia Eagles. The Bears desperately need a win to get back on track in the wild card hunt while the Eagles want to keep pace with the Dallas Cowboys, who currently are atop of the division.
This Wild Card matchup from last season is a critical game for both teams if they have any hopes of making the playoffs again this season. Here is a look at the odds for this NFC contest, along with the bet you should be making regarding the Bears-Eagles matchup.
It is no secret that the Bears are struggling on offense this season after finishing in the top-10 in scoring a year ago. Chicago is averaging just under 19 points per game, and Mitchell Trubisky has taken multiple steps backward as a passer. Despite having one of the best defenses in the NFL, they aren't able to keep up with the better teams as their quarterback is holding them back from winning games.
Over the last eight games, Chicago has covered the spread just twice as their offense has been awful. Making matters worse is their next opponent in the Eagles have had a ton of success against them as of late, winning four of the five previous meetings.
Philadelphia has problems but its passing attack isn't one of them. Quarterback Carson Wentz has thrown 14 touchdowns this season to just four interceptions, despite not a lot of help from his receiving corps. But that unit should improve as DeSean Jackson is expected back this week after missing the last several games with a groin injury.
That is why I like the Eagles to not only win this week but to cover and for the Over to hit in this contest. The Over has hit in four of the last six games involving the Eagles as the team is averaging more than 24 points per game. Add on the fact that their defense has struggled to stop opposing passing attacks and it's not hard to see why so many Eagles' games end up being of the high-scoring variety.
At 888sport.com, a parlay of the Eagles' point spread and the Over pays out +240, which feels like an easy win in Week 9. If you are worried about the spread, consider taking the Eagles moneyline and the Over at +175. Both are excellent values for this matchup. Look for Philadelphia to win this one fairly easily and improve to 5-4 on the season.
