It is absolutely no secret that the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox form arguably the most intense rivalries in all of professional sports, with the famed franchises making up the most heated rivalry in Major League Baseball.
With such a rivalry once again ramping up on the game’s biggest stage due to both team’s recent string of success, the tables might be turning in favor of New York – at least according to the oddsmakers -- despite the fact that Boston will enter the 2019 campaign as the reigning World Series Champions.
Several bookmakers have tweaked their odds in recent days and now project the Yankees to win more regular season games than their American League East counterpart. That mirrors the recently announced PECOTA projections.
FanDuel and 888Sport, among others, now have New York’s 2019 regular-season win total over/under set at 96.5 games. On the other hand, the Red Sox’s over/under win is set at 95.5 regular-season games.
Last season, the Yankees won 100 regular-season games en route to clinching a wild-card playoff berth before eventually bowing out at the hands of the surging Red Sox in the American League Division Series.
Though the Yankees did manage to advance past the wild-card phase of the postseason, defeating the Oakland Athletics in the American League’s winner-take-all affair.
The Red Sox, who ultimately won yet another title in the end, captured 108 regular-season games in 2018 while clinching the American League East’s divisional crown as well.
Not only are the Yankees projected to win more regular-season games than the Red Sox in 2019, but it appears as though the Bronx Bombers are favored to have a better postseason outcome this time around.
While Boston opened up spring training as favorites to win a second consecutive title, with some websites even attaching +550 odds to Boston’s World Series potential, the Yankees have now surpassed the Red Sox as the new World Series favorites too.
According to 888Sport, the Yankees are now the favorites to win the 2019 World Series, thanks to the team’s +600 odds. As it stands today, 888 Sport has the Red Sox listed at +650, which ranks second behind only New York.
It is also worth noting, however, that the Houston Astros, who won the 2017 World Series, are also listed at +650.
Other than the Los Angeles Dodgers currently slated at +750, which has the National League West powerhouse atop the National League in terms of World Series potential, there isn’t another Major League Baseball team that has odds under +1200 – the Cubs and Phillies both sit at +1200, according to the aforementioned 888Sport.
As the Red Sox continue to gear up to bring yet another trophy into the 2019 season with the Yankees projected by some to take over the American League on paper, this back-and-forth rivalry couldn’t be more even at the moment.
With the Red Sox managing to retain the majority of their talent from last season, though Boston did lose a few key pieces of the roster, the Yankees no doubt upgraded their talent making this quite the tough call with March now right around the corner.
