Sports betting is legal in West Virginia via both multiple in-person facilities as well as the internet. Five gaming centers are spread across the state that take sports wagers, as well as offer traditional casino games. There’s also a mobile site operational in the state, with more poised to come online in 2019.
There is currently a sole site to place legal sports bets in West Virginia: BetLucky.com. State law allows for up to 13 more online sportsbooks, though they have yet to announce a launch date. Major providers like DraftKings and FanDuel are expected to take legal sports bets, and the state lottery also appears interested in offering multiple online gaming offerings as well.
Online betting is easy to sign up. Eligible players need to log on to the site and be physically within the state in order to place a bet on any existing site, or those set to follow.
West Virginia passed its sports betting bill in March 2018, even before the federal ban was struck down. The state could have theoretically taken a bet when the ban was struck down in May 2018, but several months of regulatory delays postponed the market for several more months. Still, West Virginia was able to meet all requirements by September 2018, becoming the fifth state in the nation to take a legal sports bet.
